Brazil clinched their 9th Copa America title following their dramatic 3-1 win against Peru at Rio de Janeiro’s Marcana Stadium.
The hosts opened the scoring in the 15th minute after Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus slipped past two defenders and crossed the ball for Everton Soares, who volleyed past Peru keeper Pedro Gallese.
Peru didn’t back down as Paolo Guerrero gave his team a glimmer of hope after his equalizer in the 44th minute from the penalty spot.
Minutes later, Brazil got the lead back to 2-1 when Jesus converted a decisive goal from the top of the penalty area before the break.
Jesus was sent off in the 70th minute for a foul on Carlos Zambrano and received his second yellow card, leaving Brazil to finish the match with men.
However, Peru still couldn’t capitalize on that advantage and Richarlison ended all hopes of a comeback with a 90th minute to seal Brazil’s first South America trophy in 12 years.
